What Is The Mozilla Community?
Mozilla is a global community with shared values. We believe that the Internet is an integral component of modern life, and is therefore a public resource that must be open to all. And we believe that Free and Open Source software developed and promoted through transparent, community processes is the best way to realize this vision. We think these values are important, and we hope that everyone who wants to contribute to the Mozilla project takes the time to read the Mozilla Manifesto.
In fact, Mozilla consists of many communities, collaborating around the world on testing, engineering, localization and marketing. Each of these communities works closely together within their scope of work; communication between communities is also important; peer review and coordination of work is key to the success of the overall project.
What Is Community Marketing?
Mozilla does not have the advertising budget of a major corporation, and the hundreds of millions of users of Mozilla software have, (in almost all cases) found out about it by word-of-mouth, through their friends and acquaintances. In other words, it is the community that has made Mozilla what it is, by developing, testing and localizing software and documentation, and by marketing this software to the world.
The Mozilla community has run some of the most famous grass-roots marketing campaigns in the history of software. Shortly after Firefox 1.0 was released in 2004, the Spread Firefox community helped to design and fund an advert in the New York Times containing the names of 10,000 Mozilla community members.
In 2006, the Firefox community in Oregon, USA caused a sensation when they created the Firefox Crop Circle, which was (apparently) visible from altitudes of 10,000 feet (3,000 meters).
And in 2008, the global Mozilla community set a new world record for software downloads with the release of Firefox 3.0.
The Mozilla community is very diverse, with lots of different skills and interests. Consequently, there are many Mozilla community marketing resources on the web. This guide is here to help you find what you need, or give you ideas about getting started with community marketing.
Many of us find it very rewarding to be a part of this community: you can suddenly find you have friends on the other side of the world, or people with a common interest living on the same street as you. We hope you have the same experience.
Find others that share your same passion and work together!
Depending on where you live, there may be a good chance that there are people with a common interest in Mozilla who are already active nearby. Check Mozilla Near You to see if there are any Mozilla community members local to you - you might be surprised!
Anyone Can Contribute
There are hundreds of ways you can get involved with the Mozilla marketing community. That can simply amount to writing a blog about what you think about Mozilla software (and other things), or if you want to meet other members of the Mozilla community, you might want to find out about events going on in your area. If you are looking for inspiration, think about what you enjoy doing, and see how it could apply to community marketing.
