Marketing/Distribution

Mozilla produces Free software, and so it is a fundamental principle that Mozilla software can be redistributed or modified by anyone. And we are delighted if the community wants to redistribute the source code and unbranded versions of the software, or unmodified versions of the branded software available from Mozilla.com.

We are careful about allowing people to use the brand names and brand images (such as the logos) for modified versions of the software for a number of reasons. We believe that brands (protected as trademarks) are very important in software. They are an important point of trust for both users and developers, and they need to be looked after. If you do not manage your trademark, you can place it at risk. That is why we ask that if you modify the code in a Mozilla product, you do not then redistribute it under a Mozilla trademarks without permission from Mozilla.

Distributing Unmodified Software

We want it to be easy for the community to download and redistribute software. Probably the best place to go for unmodified installers (also known as binaries) is this site:
http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/.

If you are going to distribute this software under its trademarked name (Firefox, Thunderbird etc.), you must share the latest versions. That means navigating to the product you want, and then look for "latest" with the highest release number. You will also need to choose which operating system and language version you want (languages are identified by their ISO 639-1 code, country variations by their ISO 3166-1 code). If there is a reason why you would not want to share the latest versions (if it does not meet your needs and an earlier version does), then we would really like to know about it - please contact us. Also, if you are going to distribute software, please do read our Trademark Policy, especially the section, "Unaltered Binaries".

CD Artwork

If you are burning CDs, you might also want some CD artwork. Now, we do not have anything "official" at the moment, but we will launch a community design site in 2009: watch this space!

Distributing Modified Software

If you would like to distribute branded versions of Mozilla software (e.g. something called "Firefox" or "Thunderbird" or "Bugzilla") which you, or someone else, has modified, we would like to hear from you. This is very important to us. So, please read the Trademark Policy, and then please contact the Mozilla's business development team to discuss with us. We will soon have customization guidelines publicaly available too.

Distributing Source Code

You are of course very welcome to distribute the source code to Mozilla software: it is available under several open source licenses. The tarballs are also available here:
http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/.

If you don't know what a tarball is (and most of us do not!), then you probably do not want the source code at all. If you modify the source code and redistribute it, you must review our Trademark Policy first.
